This past Friday we hiked the Beehive Trail in Acadia National Park. Before we started hiking, a warning sign was posted at the beginning of the trail.

The sign was warning us of impending danger. We read it, thought about it for a minute, and then decided we wanted to do the hike even though there was danger involved.

After we got home, I started thinking about that sign and how it reminds me of some warnings in scripture that God gives us.

Many times I’ve read a warning, and because I have a sinful nature, I didn’t heed the warning, and it caused pain in my life.

God’s warnings are not to hurt us; they’re to keep us from possible impending danger. Too often, we ignore His warnings.

The first recorded warning in the Bible is the warning to Adam and Eve. He warned them not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. They ignored His warning, and we know that came at a great cost.

In the New Testament, Paul tells us in the book of Colossians to “Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.”

Why does he tell us this? Because he knows sin separates us from God, and sin can cause unnecessary hardships and pain.

This week, read God’s word, look for warnings, and remember these warnings are there because God loves us.
